Cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer of all Americans and is a leading cause of death worldwide. Pharmacotherapy in cardiovascular disease is a rapidly changing and dynamic field due to the high degree of investigational efforts applied to this area. Core areas in which there have been a number of significant changes in practice over the last 10-20 years include the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, and atrial fibrillation.
• Identify advances made in the pharmacotherapeutic treatment of cardiovascular disease
• Discuss the pharmacology of agents commonly used to treat cardiovascular disease
• Develop a rational pharmaceutical care plan for a patient with an acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, or chronic heart failure
• Identify appropriate monitoring and safety concerns for medications commonly used in cardiovascular disease
• Discuss the results from recently published clinical trials in the primary literature and their potential impact on clinical practice guidelines developed for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
• Identify areas of future research in key cardiovascular areas
